Thank you very much for your contribution to my website M. C. Walton. Your poem offers some very sound advice and observation about life; it is worth reading ten times over. Here it is for those you who have not yet done this. However, I would like to bring the premise into question for general discussion, the premise being that "Life offers no spare change." This is contrary to the of many people, including my older brother and stepmother, that life will sometimes grant opportunities or certain windfalls to them without their having anything to do with it, because, they say, the "universe is looking out for them." This is closely related to the concept of luck, and that some people have more of it than others. Have any of you ever had experiences that made you think that universe was looking out for you, or do you think that people who hold that view will never get anywhere in life because they will spend their time waiting for spare change as the years go by, not applying themselves to better their situation in life?

Is the original poem posted somewhere here? On your question, I'll venture that the answer need not be either/or. Work diligently, and yet be humble and grateful for the strength you use. Accomplishments are wonderful...and we should be grateful rather then proud when we achieve them .. C.S.Lewis said that humility is sometimes misconceived as cultivating a low opinion of yourself; rather it consists in taking the same great joy in a great accomplishment, whether it is yours or another's
